Lane Furniture Carved Walnut & Burl Side Table, Style No. 1435-05, c. 1972–1974
Documented, Dated, and Distinctly American
This exceptional side table is a fully documented example from Lane Furniture of Altavista, Virginia — one of America's most storied furniture manufacturers, in continuous production from 1912 through the late 20th century. The original Lane label on the underside reads Style No. 1435-05, Serial No. 227922-1, and Lane's well-established serial number dating system places production firmly in the early-to-mid 1970s, circa 1972–1974.
The design is a tour de force of the American Hollywood Regency and Chinoiserie-influenced modernism that defined the most ambitious residential furniture of the era. Four substantial Parsons-style legs are entirely sheathed in a deeply carved open fretwork of interlocking circles and concave forms — a motif that runs continuously across all four sides of the apron as well, creating a sculptural base of remarkable visual complexity. The top is inset with a bookmatched burl veneer panel in a warm honey-walnut tone, framed by a darker walnut border with a subtle stepped profile.
The carving is crisp and confident throughout, with no losses or repairs. The burl top shows the beautiful, slightly irregular grain that only genuine burl veneer produces. The overall finish has mellowed to a rich, warm tone consistent with fifty years of careful ownership.
This is a table that commands attention in any room — substantial enough to anchor a seating group, refined enough to stand alone as a sculptural object.
Provenance & Manufacturer
